Move-Out Cleaning Checklist for Renters

September 8, 2026 M.J.C Cleaning Service Company

When you move out of a rental, the condition you leave it in is one of the things your landlord looks at during the final walk-through. Check your lease first — it usually says how clean the unit is expected to be — and then work through the home room by room once it's empty.

Kitchen: clean inside the oven, the refrigerator and freezer, and the microwave. Degrease the stovetop and range hood. Wipe the inside of every cabinet and drawer, scrub the sink, and pull the appliances forward if you can to clean the floor behind them.

Bathrooms: remove scale and soap scum from the tub, shower, sink and toilet, including around the base. Clean the mirror, the medicine cabinet, the exhaust fan cover and the floor behind the toilet.

Bedrooms and living areas: wipe closet shelves and rods, dust baseboards and window sills, clean window tracks, wipe light switches and door handles, and remove any nails, hooks or tape you put up.

Floors: vacuum and mop every room edge to edge, including inside closets and where furniture used to sit.

The spots most often missed: the top of the refrigerator, inside the oven, cabinet interiors, window tracks, baseboards and the exhaust fan covers.

Take dated photos of each room when you finish, so you have a record of how you left it.
